(WESTERVILLE, OH — July 14, 2023) The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) and WellOwner.org have announced that Protect Your Groundwater Day will be held on September 5, 2023.

An annual event, Protect Your Groundwater Day is a day of action and education in which organizations across the country urge water well owners to test, tend, and treat their private water systems. There are estimated to be more than 13 million private water wells in the United States and over 40 percent of public water is provided from groundwater sources.

NGWA encourages annual inspections of private water systems by certified water well contractors to ensure systems are operating correctly and producing safe and healthy water. On Protect Your Groundwater Day, NGWA will be partnering with various groups across the country to raise awareness on the importance of maintaining groundwater quality through various types of community outreach.

“Protect Your Groundwater Day is really focused on what individuals and families can do to take control of their water quality and safeguard their health,” says NGWA CEO Terry S. Morse, CAE, CIC. “It’s one of the most important things we do as an organization and we’re thankful to all of our partners who help us promote the event every year.”

WellOwner.org, which is operated by NGWA with assistance from the Rural Community Assistance Partnership, offers private well owners tip sheets on water well maintenance and a “Find A Contractor” page which allows the public to find certified local water well contractors in their area.
