Special issue features articles and research on groundwater remediation projects with multiple contaminants and hydrogeological challenges.

(WESTERVILLE, OH — September 5, 2023) The National Ground Water Association announced a special issue of its research publication Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation® (GWMR) was recently published on the challenges of working with complex groundwater remediation sites.

The Summer 2023 issue defines “complex sites” as those groundwater projects that present multiple challenges on the path toward remediation. These include multiple contaminants, diverse geography, fast water flow, deep contamination, and chemically aggressive groundwater. The articles in the special issue highlight new technologies and strategies that can used to address these challenges as well as a case study on new developments in soil excavations and recent developments in thermal remediation and electrokinetic treatments.

The special issue of GWMR, titled “Focus on Complex Sites” was developed with special guest editors Gaisheng Liu of the Kansas Geological Survey and Murray Einarson of Haley & Aldrich, in Bend, Oregon.

The study of remediating complex sites has steadily grown in importance due to the increasing level of contaminants, decreasing aquifer levels, and new environmental regulations being placed on groundwater. NGWA, which publishes GWMR, has long been a leader in fostering groundwater remediation research and studies.

“The ultimate goal of contaminant hydrogeology is to understand the fate and transport of pollutants in groundwater, and to use that understanding to responsibly mitigate the risk these substances pose to humans and the environment,” said GWMR Editor-in-Chief Rick Devlin, Ph.D. “I think this issue contributes to those efforts and would like to thank everyone who gave their time, work, and research.”
