The issue will feature articles and research on the growing importance of groundwater and geothermal projects.

(WESTERVILLE, OH — March 3, 2023) The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) announced that a special issue of its research publication Groundwater® will be published focusing on advances and research in the field of groundwater and geothermal energy systems (GES).

GES are energy-efficient systems that utilize groundwater and the Earth’s natural temperatures to heat and cool homes, commercial buildings, and industrial complexes. Due to various tax credits and their low cost of producing energy, geothermal projects are expected to grow by 14 times their current amount by 2050.

The growth of the geothermal industry has led to an increased need for research into the design of GES and their use of groundwater, including groundwater flow and heat transport modeling.

The special issue, which is Groundwater’s March-April 2023 issue, was developed by an international group of editors with diverse backgrounds in groundwater science, hydrogeology, and geophysics. It will feature research articles, case studies, and highlight new and successful applications for groundwater in GES.

“We are proud to release this special Issue to raise awareness of this important topic and to help stakeholders understand the complex issues related to geothermal energy systems,” said Dr. Leonard Konikow, editor-in-chief of Groundwater. “I would like to thank everyone who contributed their time and knowledge to this important endeavor.”

NGWA has long been involved in advocating for tax credits to promote geothermal technologies and earlier this year most geothermal tax credits in the United States were extended until 2030.
